Edition 2025 — Glorie di San Martino

The 2025 edition of Le Glorie di San Martino took place on Monday, November 10th, in Scanno. At sunset, the Cardella, La Plaja, and San Martino districts simultaneously ignited three massive wood pyres, up to 18 meters high, on the hills surrounding the historic center. Despite depopulation and the effort involved, the locals honored the traditional date in any weather, under the banner 'tradition surpasses technology'.

On November 10th, 2025, a Monday, Scanno renewed the ancient ritual of Le Glorie di San Martino. As the sun went down, the three glories of the Cardella, La Plaja, and San Martino districts were set on fire simultaneously on the hills surrounding the village, reaching up to 18 meters in height, with columns of fire illuminating the valley. The ignition was entrusted, as per tradition, to the throwing of the long pole with the fuse. Mulled wine and roasted chestnuts were offered to those present, while the community processed through the alleys. The edition took place in conjunction with Deguscanno, dedicated to Scanno's gastronomic tradition, and was part of an ideal cultural twinning with the fire ritual of Sukagawa, Japan.

Programme

Fixed-date ritual, not based on a performance schedule:

  • Afternoon — Final preparations of the three pyres on the hills of the Cardella, La Plaja, and San Martino districts.
  • At sunset (~6:30 PM) — Simultaneous ignition of the three glories, with the throwing of the fuse-bearing pole by a young man (rite of passage).
  • Following — Descent of the community with bells and instruments, procession through the alleys, mulled wine, and roasted chestnuts.

In conjunction, Deguscanno took place with tastings, food and wine tours, and guided walks in the historic center.

Highlights

The simultaneous ignition of the three pyres up to 18 meters high at sunset; the rite of passage of throwing the fuse-bearing pole; the competition between districts for the tallest and longest-lasting glory.
