Jazz as a language of peace on UNESCO International Day
Every spring, around April 30th, Tolentino also becomes part of the large global network of the International Jazz Day, the International Jazz Day established in 2011 by UNESCO at the initiative of pianist Herbie Hancock. The goal is to celebrate jazz as a language of dialogue, meeting, and exchange between cultures, a message of peace that involves hundreds of cities worldwide every year.
In the Macerata area, the celebrations are curated by Musicamdo Jazz, a historic entity on the Marche jazz scene, which organizes a distributed project over three evenings and three cities: Camerino, Tolentino, and Macerata. The Tolentino stop takes place at the "N. Vaccaj" Musical Institute, in the Municipality of Tolentino, in the province of Macerata.
The format of the Tolentino evening combines the dimension of live concert with that of historical-musical narration: not a simple recital, but a guided journey into the history of jazz, told from the stage as the music takes shape. It is an educational and rigorous approach, finding the ideal setting at the Vaccaj Institute, between musical education and cultured listening.
The project is born from the collaboration between Musicamdo Jazz, the association Adesso Musica, the N. Biondi Musical Institute, and the N. Vaccaj Institute, with the support of the local Municipalities, the University of Camerino (UNICAM), the University of Macerata (UNIMC), the Ministry of Culture, the Marche Region, and the Tolentino UNESCO Club. The artistic direction of the review is entrusted to Daniele Massimi.
The International Jazz Day in Tolentino is a rare opportunity to listen to great pages of international jazz in an intimate and cozy setting, far from the logic of large summer festivals. Each edition offers a different theme and a lineup of local musicians and guests, keeping alive a tradition that, in the Marche region, has roots stretching back over fifty years of jazz history.
The 2026 edition of the International Jazz Day in Tolentino offered a journey through the evolution of the saxophone in jazz, from the origins with Sidney Bechet to the modern language of Michael Brecker. A format that, as per Musicamdo tradition, combined live concert with historical-musical narration from the stage.
The Tolentino stop was part of a distributed project across three evenings and three cities in the Macerata area, with the support of the Tolentino UNESCO Club, the Marche Region, and the Ministry of Culture.
