Holy Week and the 'Uomo Vivo' (U Gioia) Easter

The 2025 edition

Easter 2025 in Scicli fell on Sunday, April 20, at the end of a Holy Week that began with Palm Sunday on April 13. As per tradition, the Uomo Vivo festivities opened at midnight on Holy Saturday in the church of Santa Maria La Nova with the «Resuscita» rite, the unveiling of the Risen Christ statue amidst shouts of exultation.

Local reports described a city «crazy with Joy»: an unstoppable wave of sounds, colors, and emotions, with streets packed with crowds, the music of the bands, and balconies raining petals down on the procession. The statue of the Risen Christ was carried on the shoulders of the bearers and raced through the streets of the historic center, confirming 'U Gioia as the most heartfelt and well-attended festival of the year for the people of Scicli.
