The Historical Carousel of the Districts of Cori

The Historical Carousel of the Districts of Cori, also known as the Palio of Cori, is one of the most deeply rooted historical re-enactments in Lazio. Established in 1937 and now approaching nine decades of history, the event takes place in the town of Cori, a village perched on the Lepini Mountains in the province of Latina. The festival blends popular faith, local heritage, and equestrian competition in honor of the Madonna del Soccorso—whose apparition in Cori is traditionally dated to 1521—and Saint Oliva, the city's patron saint since the Middle Ages.

The Ring Joust

The heart of the event is the Ring Joust, a test of skill and courage that thrills the crowd. Each district fields three riders who, at full gallop along the track, have only a few attempts to spear a tiny ring suspended over two meters high with the tip of their dagger. The district that collects the most rings wins the palio: the challenges are often decided at the very last pass, as seen in 2025 when Porta Signina triumphed by a single ring after a tie-breaker. The race is surrounded by historical processions, flag-wavers, drummers, and performers who bring the atmosphere of the past back to life.

The three districts: Signina, Romana, and Ninfina

The city of Cori is ideally divided into three districts that fuel the rivalry: Signina, Romana, and Ninfina. Each district has its own colors, riders, and loyal followers, and meticulously prepares the parades, propitiatory dinners, and celebrations that follow a victory. The contested palio is a banner painted each year by a different artist, which then becomes part of the event's hall of fame.

The 2026 program

The 2026 edition is divided into three major events between June and July. It opens on June 20th with the Oath of the Priors in Piazza Sant'Oliva, featuring the blessing of the palio banners and the riders. On June 28th, the Palio of the Madonna del Soccorso takes place in Piazza Signina, preceded by a historical parade. The grand finale is on July 25th with the Palio of Saint Oliva at the Romolo Palombelli Municipal Stadium, nicknamed "Stoza," which determines the city champion.
