The widespread festival week celebrating the birth of Rome's garden-district
Happy Birthday Garbatella is the cultural festival that celebrates the anniversary of the founding of Garbatella every February, the famous garden-district in Rome's Municipio VIII, within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. The anniversary marks February 18, 1920, the day the district's foundation stone was laid in Piazza Benedetto Brin. Since that date, Garbatella has become one of the city's most iconic places: small villas, public housing blocks, staircases, shared courtyards, and a neighborhood life that has stood the test of time.
The event was born in 1999 from the spontaneous initiative of citizens and local associations; since 2004, coordination has been entrusted to the I.T.A.C.A. association, which curates the schedule under the 'Cultura e Territori' brand. It is a volunteer-driven, low-budget project that thrives on the free participation of artists, guides, archives, workshops, and neighborhood committees: precisely for this reason, the free nature of the events is considered a foundational value rather than an organizational detail.
The format does not feature a fenced-off area or a central stage. Events are spread over several days across the living spaces of the district: independent galleries and spaces, the Teatro Palladium, the Pullino Senior Social Center, historical archives, schools, parishes, public housing blocks, and squares. Participants walk, enter, listen, and often stop to talk with those who have lived in Garbatella for decades.
The symbolic heart remains the morning of February 18, when the institutional tribute to the foundation stone takes place in Piazza Brin, in the presence of Municipio VIII and local associations. In the afternoon, the historic Nonna Garbatella event is held, created in 1997 to reward the architectural beauty of the district and preserve its historical memory. These are simple, well-attended moments that explain better than any guidebook what the word 'community' means here.
Visitors from outside Rome will find a rare opportunity: to visit Garbatella not as a distracted tourist, but accompanied by those who live there, during days when doors and courtyards that are normally private are opened. It is also the best way to understand the garden-city concept applied to Roman public housing in the 1920s, an urban model that set a precedent and which Italian cinema and television have made familiar to millions of viewers.
The district is served by the Garbatella Metro B station, just a few minutes from Piramide and the historic center: the festival can easily become a half-day of alternative city exploration, far from the most crowded circuits.
The twenty-seventh edition took place from February 8 to 28, 2026, with the heart of the festivities during the week of February 18, the anniversary of the 1920 foundation stone laying. The theme chosen by the organizers, Empathy expressed through «Le Mejo Parole», permeated the entire schedule: from art exhibitions to oral history meetings, and awards dedicated to acts of kindness between neighbors.
The program alternated visual arts, historical memory, and popular participation, confirming the festival's widespread format: no single stage, but dozens of neighborhood locations open to the public, always with free admission. The event was held under the patronage of Rome Capital and Municipio VIII, curated by the I.T.A.C.A. association.
Metro line B, Garbatella stop (then a 5-10 minute walk towards Piazza Benedetto Brin). By train: Roma Ostiense station, connected to the Piramide metro. Parking in the district is difficult by car: public transport is recommended.
All events have free admission. Some guided tours and workshops require reservations due to limited capacity.

Wear comfortable shoes: most events are reached on foot, involving staircases and inclines. February in Rome is mild but damp: a waterproof jacket is advisable.
