One hundred musicians and seven hundred choristers for the Addolorata hymn
The Good Friday Procession in Campobasso has its roots in 1626, when it was known as "Il Mortorio". For almost four centuries, on the day of Christ's death, the Molise capital gathers around the statue of the Madonna Addolorata in one of the most participated rites of the regional Holy Week.
The musical heart of the procession is the hymn "Teco vorrei o Signore", a composition by Michele De Nigris with lyrics by Pietro Metastasio. According to historians, the song represents the evolution of the "Lament of the Most Holy Madonna" recited in past centuries by the ancient confraternities. It is sung by an imposing choir of the Addolorata, composed of about one hundred musicians and seven hundred singers, all rigorously dressed in black, with men and women arranged separately, the latter with veiled heads.
Along the route, the procession stops in front of the prison on via Cavour for the "Prayer of the Prisoner": an appeal addressed to the Madonna followed by the Bishop's blessing, a gesture of closeness to those serving a sentence. It is one of the most touching moments of the procession, which crosses the historic center and the Murattiano district.
The Good Friday Procession 2026 was held on Friday, April 3rd at 6:00 PM, departing from the Cathedral of the SS. Trinità. As per tradition, the procession crossed the streets of the historic center and the Murattiano district behind the statue of the Madonna Addolorata.
The large Addolorata choir — about one hundred musicians and seven hundred black-clad singers, directed by Maestro Antonio Colasurdo — accompanied the procession with the hymn 'Teco vorrei o Signore'. In front of the prison on via Cavour, the 'Prayer of the Prisoner' was held, with an appeal to the Madonna and the Bishop's blessing.

Participation is free. During the procession, the historic center is closed to traffic; it is advisable to position yourself along the route in advance.
