The ancient carnival rite of the funeral procession of Giuann and Quarandoin in the historic center of Gravina in Puglia

The Funeral of Giuann Carnevale is one of the most distinctive carnival traditions of Gravina in Puglia, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in Apulia. It is the staging of an ancient peasant rite: the funeral procession of a straw effigy representing Carnival, affectionately called Giuann, accompanied by his wife Quarandoin (Lent) and a retinue of gossips mourning his death.
In local Gravina folk culture, Giuann and Quarandoin are the two masks symbolizing the changing seasons of the festival. Local legend tells of Giuann, a former priest who abandoned his cassock to join Quarandoin, a figure embodying the Lenten period. The funeral of the effigy thus marks the end of Carnival and the entry into Lent: a moment both solemn and mocking, where theatrical mourning blends with peasant irony.
The rite begins with the setting up of the chapel of rest, where the effigy of Giuann is displayed for visitors before the departure. The funeral procession then winds through the alleys and squares of the old town, enlivened by theatrical performances, a brass band, and lamenting gossips. In some versions of the tradition, the leader of the group publicly reads the deceased's will, written in verse and salacious language, to the amused participation of the spectators.
The Gravina Carnival is rooted in peasant culture, as a long-awaited moment to break the monotony of hard labor. Straw effigies were once hung on doors or between balconies for the duration of the festivities, believed to bring prosperity. The revival of the Funeral of Giuann, promoted by the Pro Loco UNPLI of Gravina together with Viaggio a Gravina in Puglia, the L'Aretรฉ association, and various local entities, restores to the community an identity heritage made of social values and the subversions allowed in carnival rites.
