The peasant Carnival of the Sannio: masks, tà kkare, and bonfires in Piazza Aldo Moro
Fragnevale is the Carnival celebration of Fragneto Monforte, a village of just over 1,700 inhabitants perched at 380 meters above sea level in the heart of the Sannio region, in the province of Benevento (Campania). This is not a carnival of massive floats or parades designed for tour buses; it is a village festival built around traditional peasant masks, a procession through the town center, and a bonfire that closes the afternoon in Piazza Aldo Moro.
The heart of Fragnevale is the performance by the La Takkarata association, which brings to the square «I Misi Fragnetani and i Zingari Caudarari»: two groups of masks from the local repertoire that open the day before the parade. The meeting point is set in the «la teglia» area, from where the procession begins its journey through the village to the main square.
La Takkarata is not a group formed just for the occasion: it is a research association founded in 1969, inspired by the spontaneous groups active in the village as early as the beginning of the 20th century. The name comes from the tà kkare, seasoned olive wood sticks that, when beaten to a rhythm, produce the characteristic sound of the dance of the same name, documented in Fragneto Monforte since the 19th century. The costumes also reflect the village life of the mid-1800s, with multicolored ribbons and details hinting at Eastern and Balkan influences. For over fifty years, the group has passed down traditional songs, dances, and clothing: this is why the Fragneto Carnival retains such a unique character.
The most anticipated moment arrives at the end of the parade in Piazza Aldo Moro: the lighting of the bonfire and the «Tribunal of Joy», the ritual with which the community bids farewell to Carnival amidst burlesque sentences and collective laughter. It is the classic epilogue of the Southern Apennine carnivals, where fire marks the change of season and symbolically closes the time of overturning the rules.
Fragnevale is organized by the Pro Loco Fragnetana and is part of the widespread festival coordinated by UNPLI Benevento: in 2026, the calendar brought together twenty-six local Pro Loco associations from February 7th to 22nd, transforming the province into one large open-air carnival featuring parades, historical rites, and folk groups. «The Carnival of the Sannio Pro Loco represents much more than a calendar of events: it is the authentic expression of our communities», explained provincial president Renzo Mazzeo while presenting the program.
The village stretches across fertile hills along the ancient tratturo (sheep track) that led toward Puglia. The toponym refers to the Latin farneus (oak), while «Monforte» commemorates Bartolomeo di Monteforte, the original feudal lord, and serves to distinguish the town from the nearby Fragneto l'Abate. The earthquakes of 1688 and 1702 struck the town hard, but it always found the strength to rebuild: the 16th-century Ducal Palace of the Montalto family stands as a testament to this. Beyond the Carnival, the local calendar is marked by the feast of the patron saint Saint Nicholas and, in autumn, by the international hot air balloon festival that has brought Italian and foreign crews to the skies of the Sannio since 1987.
Visitors from outside the region will find here a very pure example of an inland Campanian Carnival: few concessions to spectacle, plenty of oral and gestural tradition, and a square that gathers around the fire in the late afternoon.
The Carnival of Fragneto Monforte returned to the square in February 2026 as part of the UNPLI Benevento provincial festival, which brought together twenty-six Sannio Pro Loco associations in a single calendar from February 7th to 22nd. For Fragneto Monforte, the event was entrusted to the Pro Loco Fragnetana, with artistic direction by the La Takkarata association.
The afternoon began at 3:00 PM in the 'la teglia' area with 'I Misi Fragnetani and i Zingari Caudarari', the masks of the local repertoire, before transforming into a procession along the village streets. The finale, at 4:30 PM in Piazza Aldo Moro, featured the lighting of the bonfire and the 'Tribunal of Joy', a burlesque ritual with which the community bids farewell to Carnival.
The provincial calendar released on February 6, 2026, scheduled 'Fragnevale 2026' for February 14th; however, the detailed program published by the local press on the eve of the event indicated Sunday, February 15th, as the day of the festival.

Note: the UNPLI Benevento provincial calendar published on February 6, 2026, indicated 'Fragnevale 2026' for February 14th, while the detailed program released in the local press on the eve of the weekend scheduled the event for Sunday, February 15th.
Fragneto Monforte is easily reached by car: the village is located in the inland Sannio area, north of Benevento, which also remains the most useful railway reference (Benevento station, then road connection). The nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino.
The meeting point is in the «la teglia» area; the parade crosses the village center and ends in Piazza Aldo Moro, where the bonfire is lit in the late afternoon and the «Tribunal of Joy» is celebrated.
