The bonfire and January traditions in Val Seriana
The Festival of Saint Anthony Abbot is celebrated in Orezzo, a hamlet of Gazzaniga (Province of Bergamo), in the heart of Val Seriana. Saint Anthony Abbot, protector of animals and the farming world, is at the center of a celebration that has united the religious and popular dimensions for generations, in the midst of winter.
The festival, organized by the Pro Loco Gazzaniga-Orezzo and the Parish of the Most Holy Trinity of Orezzo, is divided into several moments:
The Saint Anthony's bonfire is a widespread ritual throughout the Alps and pre-Alps: a symbol of purification and good omen for the new year, it brings the community together around the fire on one of the coldest nights of the year. In Orezzo, this tradition keeps alive the village's connection with its rural roots and the spirituality of the Bergamo Val Seriana.
The 2026 edition takes place from January 11 to 16 at the Oratory of Orezzo, a hamlet of Gazzaniga. On January 11, there will be the house-to-house collection and Saint Anthony's lunch; on January 16, the eve of the festival, a concert by the Leslie Abbadini Trio and the traditional eve's bonfire accompanied by mulled wine.
During the festival days, there will also be religious celebrations in honor of Saint Anthony Abbot at the Oratory of Orezzo.
Gazzaniga is located in Val Seriana, in the province of Bergamo, along the former state road SP ex SS671 of Val Seriana. The hamlet of Orezzo is reachable from the town center. The festival takes place at the Oratory of Orezzo.
Free admission. The eve's bonfire and the distribution of mulled wine are held in the evening.
