Hike on Monte Ascensione, local products and live music in the Piceno area
The Festival dell'Appennino is a widespread event that spans the central Apennines between spring and autumn, with dozens of stages in as many villages across four regions: Marche, Abruzzo, Lazio, and Umbria. Each event combines a nature excursion to discover an area affected by the 2016 earthquake with a celebration featuring music, culture, and local food and wine. The stage hosted by the Municipality of Rotella, in the Province of Ascoli Piceno, is one of the most popular on the Marche side.
The day begins with a panoramic hike starting from the hamlet of Capradosso and ascending towards the slopes of Monte Ascensione, the sacred mountain of the Piceno area. The trail is a loop of about 9 kilometers, with an elevation gain of 528 meters and a duration of approximately three and a half hours; the difficulty is classified as E (hiking), suitable for those who hike in the mountains with a minimum of training. Through woods, badlands, and wide views of the valley, participants discover one of the most evocative landscapes of the Marche hinterland.
Upon returning from the hike, the celebration moves to Rotella, at Piazzale Europa, where a refreshment point and a market offer the best of local farms: cheeses, wines, and typical products tell the agricultural vocation of this corner of the Marche. In the afternoon, live music takes the stage, transforming the square into a place of meeting and joy, with folk-pop, pop, and dance rhythms.
The Festival dell'Appennino was created with a spirit of inclusion and valorization of the inland areas affected by the 2016 earthquake: each stage is free to attend, with mandatory booking for the hike. Walking together on these trails means rediscovering communities, traditions, and natural beauty that deserve to be brought back to the center of attention. The Rotella stage is the ideal way to experience the Piceno area in 360 degrees, with gentle sport, authentic flavors, and good music.
The Rotella stage of the 17th edition of the Festival dell'Appennino was held on Sunday, May 24, 2026, as part of a festival that ran from May 3 to October 31, 2026, across 29 municipalities in four regions of the central Apennines.
The program included a meeting at 9:15 AM in Capradosso and departure at 9:30 AM for a 9 km loop hike (528 m elevation gain, difficulty E, approx. 3.5 hours) towards the slopes of Monte Ascensione. Upon return, around 1:00 PM, a refreshment point and a market featuring local farm products were set up at Piazzale Europa in Rotella. At 3:00 PM, a concert by the Tequila e Montepulciano Band concluded the day with folk-pop, pop, and dance rhythms. Participation was free with mandatory booking for the hike.
