The Ferragosto of the Pavia village

In Costa de' Nobili, a small municipality in the province of Pavia, August 15th is not just Ferragosto: it is the day of the patronal festival. The patron saint of the village is Maria Santissima Assunta, and her feast day coincides with the liturgical solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is the most important festival of the year for the community, a time when the village comes together around its church and its traditions.

The parish church

The heart of the festival is the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, on Via Generale Clerici. Built in the 15th century and rebuilt several times, it owes its current form to the late 18th-century reconstruction (1795-1798) based on a design by architect Leopold Pollack, the same architect active in those years for the University of Pavia and the villa of Belgioioso. Inside, the 19th-century marble high altar and canvases by artists from Pavia such as Bernardino Ciceri and Cesare Bernazzani are preserved: a heritage that forms the backdrop to the celebration of the Assumption.

Devotion and village festival

On August 15th, the day opens with the solemn Mass in honour of the patron saint, following the tradition of Lombard patronal festivals. Around the rite, the convivial dimension of the festival develops, with moments of gathering that bring together residents and families originally from the village, who have returned for the summer holidays. An authentic festival, far from mass tourism, which tells the rural soul of Lomellina and the lower Pavia plain.
