The Patron Saint of Origins

The Feast of Saint Sebastian Martyr is the patronal feast of Marzio, a Municipality in Valceresio in the Province of Varese, at the foot of Monte San Maffeo. Saint Sebastian has been the protector of the village since its foundation: the parish church is dedicated to him, and the community has turned to him for centuries. The feast is therefore much more than a religious commemoration: it is a moment that tells the very roots of Marzio.

The Date Moved to Sunday

Historically, the feast was celebrated on January 20th, regardless of the day of the week. To facilitate the participation of the faithful, it was recently moved to the Sunday closest to this date. A choice that has allowed an ancient tradition to be kept alive by adapting it to the rhythms of contemporary life.

Mass, Procession, and Auction

The day is divided into two main moments: the solemn mass in the morning and, in the afternoon, the Eucharistic procession through the village streets. The most characteristic element, however, is the auction of offerings: products donated by the population are auctioned for the benefit of the church of Marzio. It is an ancient mechanism of community solidarity, which combines fundraising for the maintenance of the parish and a collective celebration.

A Tradition Guarded by the Pro Loco

The Pro Loco Marzio documents and supports the feast, preserving its memory and meaning. In a Municipality of a few hundred inhabitants, the Saint Sebastian event is one of the most heartfelt moments of the year, capable of bringing the entire community together around its patron saint.
