The Epiphany of Monselice between Befana in the square and the Bonfire of the Old Woman
The Feast of Befana and Bonfire of the Old Woman is the New Year's event with which the Pro Loco Città di Monselice celebrates Epiphany, in the province of Padua. A day that combines the magic of Befana for the little ones with the peasant tradition of the propitiatory bonfire.
In the afternoon of January 6th, Befana arrives in Piazza Mazzini with entertainment and sweets for children, in a festive atmosphere that closes the Christmas holidays.
At dusk, at the Campo della Fiera, the Bonfire of the Old Woman ("falò dea Vecia") is lit: the ancient fire ritual, widespread throughout Veneto, which burns the effigy of the old woman to propitiate a good year. According to tradition, the direction of the sparks and smoke is used to draw auspices for the harvest and the months to come.
