Edition 2025 — Fanove di San Giuseppe

In 2025, Altamura once again celebrated the Fanove di San Giuseppe on March 19th, with traditional bonfires lit at sunset in the historic districts and outskirts. The ritual, blending religious devotion and ancient peasant culture, brought families and neighbors together around the fire, sharing the typical flavors of the Murgia in anticipation of spring.

The 2025 edition of the Fanove di San Giuseppe took place in Altamura on March 19th, according to the centuries-old tradition of the Alta Murgia. The bonfires were lit at sunset in the city's neighborhoods and outskirts, in a ritual that combines religious significance — the flame of Saint Joseph — with the agricultural and propitiatory meaning of welcoming the spring.

As per custom, around the fanove, the Altamura community shared bread and chickpeas, bruschetta, sausage, wine, and the typical sweets of the feast. An identity-defining event that, although scaled back over the years for environmental reasons, continues to represent one of the most deeply felt moments in the popular calendar of the Municipality of Altamura, in the province of Bari.
