Extraordinary openings of the Benedictine Abbey and the Tiberini Theatre
The FAI Spring Days are the main public event dedicated to Italy's cultural and landscape heritage, promoted by the FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano. In San Lorenzo in Campo, in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, the event is organized by the FAI Pergola - Valle del Cesano Group in collaboration with the Municipality, and offers a rare opportunity to visit two symbolic places in the village, accompanied by the Foundation's volunteers.
The highlight of this edition is the Benedictine Abbey of San Lorenzo, one of the most interesting Romanesque buildings in the Marche region, exceptionally open to the public for the first time. Founded before the year 1000 by Benedictine monks - likely from the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe in Ravenna - it is already mentioned in Otto III's diploma of 1001. The building has three naves with granite columns of Egyptian origin and houses a striking crypt containing the relics of Saint Demetrius, as well as works by Terenzio Terenzi and Ercole Ramazzani.
The second stop on the tour is the Teatro Comunale Mario Tiberini, built between 1813 and 1816 on the site of the former ballroom of the Palazzo della Rovere. The horseshoe-shaped hall features a stalls area with two tiers of boxes surmounted by a gallery, adorned with frescoes and Art Nouveau decorations. The opening fits into the regional theme of the event, "Marche, Land of Theatres", which highlights the dense network of historic Italian-style theatres scattered throughout the villages of the Marche region.
The FAI Spring Days involve hundreds of cities and thousands of volunteers across the peninsula every year. In San Lorenzo in Campo, the initiative is designed, in the words of the organizers, to rediscover "the sense of belonging to a community deeply connected to its artistic and cultural heritage". A perfect opportunity to combine a passion for art with a stroll through the historic center of this village in the Cesano Valley.
For the 34th edition of the FAI Spring Days, San Lorenzo in Campo (PU) offers a tour through two treasures of its historic center. The Benedictine Abbey, a Romanesque building already mentioned in 1001 and guardian of the relics of Saint Demetrius, is opened to the public for the first time. The Teatro Comunale Mario Tiberini, a horseshoe-shaped hall from the early 19th century with Art Nouveau decorations, completes the visit under the theme "Marche, Land of Theatres". The openings are curated by volunteers from the FAI Pergola - Valle del Cesano Group in collaboration with the Municipality.
The visits are led by volunteers from the FAI Pergola - Valle del Cesano Group, under the guidance of group leader Samanta Delmonte, in collaboration with the Municipality of San Lorenzo in Campo.
