About Entroterra

Entroterra is a collective contemporary art exhibition hosted in the evocative Rupestrian Church of Madonna delle Grazie, in the Sasso Caveoso of Matera. Ten artists reflect on the dual meaning of 'entroterra'—internal territory and inner landscape—investigating the marginality and invisibility of places far from the main routes but rich in stories.

Contemporary art enters the rock

Entroterra is a collective exhibition of contemporary art that brings artistic creation inside one of the most fascinating places in Matera: the Rupestrian Church of Madonna delle Grazie, carved into the rock of the Sasso Caveoso. Organized by the RicercArte Cultural Association together with the Rupestrian Heritage Association of Matera, the exhibition enjoys the patronage of the Municipality of Matera, APT Basilicata, and the Province of Matera.

A theme with a double reading

The title plays on the double meaning of the word 'entroterra': on one hand, the internal, geographical territory, and on the other, the inner, psychological landscape. The exhibition investigates marginality and invisibility: territories far from the main routes, but rich in stories and cultures. A journey that dialogues perfectly with the hypogeal nature of the rupestrian church, a threshold between the external and the internal.

The artists

The exhibition brings together ten artists: Letizia Abbate, Tiziana Contu, Sonia Corradi, Dimitri Gazziero, Fulvio Governale, Fabio Ventimiglia, Cinzia Marmifero, Roisin Mc Guigan, Aldo Palazzo, Cinzia Romano, and Norberto Luis Romero. The critical text is curated by the philosopher and psychoanalyst Claudio Salvatore Testaverde.

Atmosphere

Visiting Entroterra means experiencing a dual experience: that of contemporary works and the unique experience of the rupestrian space of the Sassi, a UNESCO heritage site. An event for lovers of contemporary art and places steeped in memory.
