The May 1st pilgrimage to the relics in the crypt of Fermo Cathedral
The Corpora Sancta is one of the oldest and most evocative religious traditions in the city of Fermo, in the Marche region. Every year, on May 1st, the faithful of the Archdiocese of Fermo make a pilgrimage up to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, on the panoramic Girfalco hill, to pause in prayer before the relics of saints, martyrs, and blessed individuals preserved in the crypt. It is on this occasion that the large doors of the niches housing the holy bodies, normally closed to the public, are opened: hence the Latin name Corpora Sancta.
The crypt of Fermo Cathedral, an underground space located beneath the presbytery and the high altar, dates back to the 13th century and was clad in marble in its current form during the neoclassical reconstruction work at the end of the 18th century, based on a design by architect Cosimo Morelli. Always considered a privileged place for the deposition of the remains of venerated martyrs and saints, it houses hundreds of relics that have arrived in Fermo over the centuries, arranged in elegant gilded wooden compositions within cabinets carved into the spaces between the pillars. The Cathedral itself stands on a site of extraordinary historical stratification, where early Christian origins intertwine with the great 13th-century reconstruction by Giorgio da Como.
The Corpora Sancta is not a procession through the city streets, but a pilgrimage and a prayer gathering at the Cathedral. The devotion to the relics tangibly expresses the Fermo community's connection to its heritage of faith: for the faithful, gathering before the holy bodies means renewing a spiritual bond that spans centuries. May 1st thus becomes a deeply felt event for the entire archdiocese, uniting religious dimension, historical value, and the rediscovery of the artistic heritage preserved in the crypt.
Promoted by the Archdiocese of Fermo with the care of the diocesan Office for Cultural Heritage, the Corpora Sancta is part of the religious and cultural events of the capital of the Province of Fermo. The opening of the crypt, accompanied by guided tours, also offers the rare opportunity for the curious and visitors to admire closely a normally hidden heritage, on one of the days most cherished by the city's tradition.
The 2026 edition of the Corpora Sancta takes place on Friday, May 1st, in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Fermo. Throughout the day, the large doors of the crypt's niches, which normally remain closed, will be opened to display the relics of saints, martyrs, and blessed individuals.
