The Cocomerata is one of those events that captures the essence of an Italian summer better than any major festival: a historic square, outdoor tables, the scent of home-cooked food, and a slice of chilled watermelon passed from hand to hand. In Gallicano nel Lazio, a village in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital in the Lazio region, the evening traditionally takes place in July in Piazza della Rocca, the intimate space at the foot of the ancient medieval core overlooking the town.

This is not an event manufactured for mass tourism; it is a community celebration where the true value lies in conviviality. Visitors sit right alongside the locals, and that is exactly the point.

Watermelon, the absolute star

The name says it all. In the popular tradition of central Italy, a cocomerata is the collective distribution of fresh watermelon on the hottest summer nights. It is an ancient gesture, born when watermelon was the most affordable and democratic refreshment a town could offer its inhabitants. In Gallicano, that custom has evolved into a full-fledged event with structured organization and hundreds of participants.

Food stalls and local flavors

The evening typically kicks off around 7:30 PM with the opening of the food stalls, run by Pro Loco volunteers. The menu features specialties of local Lazio cuisine, paired with regional wines: in the 2025 edition, the wine selection was supported by a collaboration with Cantina S. Andrea. Prices remain intentionally popular, in keeping with the spirit of a traditional village festival.

Live music and dancing in the square

From 9:00 PM, the Cocomerata shifts gears and becomes a musical evening. The format chosen by the Pro Loco focuses on intergenerational entertainment: the 2025 edition featured Lucia e i Cassiopea Group, a band well-known to the Canale Italia television audience, with a repertoire of ballroom dancing, group dances, and revivals that got grandparents and grandchildren dancing on the same floor. It is a choice consistent with the event's spirit: no pretense of sophistication, just a genuine desire to be together.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the Pro Loco Gallus Canit APS, a social promotion association registered with the Lazio regional board and based in Gallicano nel Lazio, operating under the patronage of the Municipality of Gallicano nel Lazio. The association's name refers to the town's etymology — gallus canit, "the rooster sings" — and the Pro Loco is the same organization that drives other local calendar events, starting with the famous Infiorata of Corpus Domini, which brings Gallicano's floral carpets to the Infiorata of Rome every year.

Gallicano nel Lazio and the Prenestini Mountains

Gallicano nel Lazio is located about thirty kilometers east of Rome, on the edge of the Prenestini Mountains, in a territory that blends countryside, archaeology, and hilltop villages. The town preserves a compact historic center with the fortress and narrow streets winding down toward the valley, bordering the archaeological area of Gabii, one of the most important Latin cities of antiquity.
