Cinema and landscape among the caves on the trail of Tomb Raider
The Cinepasseggiate are the spring project of the Lucania Film Festival, which in 2026 reaches its 26th edition: a new and participatory way to experience cinema, taking it out of the theatres and immersing it in the most fascinating places in Basilicata. Each stage pairs a film with a landscape, transforming a walk into a narrative and cultural experience.
The review kicks off in San Giorgio Lucano, in the Province of Matera, on Sunday, April 12, 2026. The route winds through the characteristic sandstone caves in the historic centre, leading to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pantano, following the trail of the film Tomb Raider by Roar Uthaug and the iconic heroine Lara Croft. The ancient caves of the village thus become the setting for a cinematic adventure, in a surprising dialogue between screen and territory.
The Cinepasseggiate are not just excursions: those who participate become part of the festival's popular jury, called upon to vote for the films in competition during the main event. Guiding participants through cinema, narrative, and cultural heritage are figures such as screenwriter Roberto Moliterni, television writer Annalisa Elba, and archaeologist Francesca Sogliani.
The San Giorgio Lucano stage is the prelude to the main summer event: the Lucania Film Festival will be held from August 5 to 9, 2026, in Pisticci, the historical heart of the festival. Other spring stages include San Chirico Raparo, Tito, Pisticci, and Marconia di Pisticci.
On Sunday, April 12, 2026, San Giorgio Lucano opens the Cinepasseggiate season of the Lucania Film Festival. From 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM, participants will walk through the historic centre and the sandstone caves up to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pantano, following the inspirations of Roar Uthaug's film Tomb Raider. The experience combines walking, cinema, and discovery of the village's heritage, and allows participants to become part of the festival's popular jury.
Registration for the 2026 popular jury is open until April 4 on the Lucania Film Festival website. Other spring stages: April 26 San Chirico Raparo, May 17 Tito (Torre di Satriano), May 31 Pisticci, June 7 Marconia di Pisticci. The main festival takes place in Pisticci from August 5 to 9, 2026.
How to get there: San Giorgio Lucano is located in the Sarmento valley, in the southern part of the province of Matera, reachable by car via the SS653 Sinnica.
Time: Sunday, April 12, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM.
Registration: participation requires registration via the Lucania Film Festival website; participants become part of the popular jury.
