The travelling carnival between Gianico, Artogne and Pian Camuno
In the heart of the lower Valle Camonica, in the province of Brescia, Carnevalando is one of the most cherished festivals of the Camunian winter. Its unique feature is being a travelling carnival: instead of staying in one square, it parades along the roads connecting the municipalities of Gianico, Artogne, and Pian Camuno, gathering masks, groups, and onlookers along the way until it forms a single, large procession.
The parade starts from the primary school in Gianico in the early afternoon. From there, the procession moves towards Artogne, where the first meeting takes place in Piazza Courcelles; shortly after, the group from Pian Camuno also starts from the Senior Centre, and the three processions reunite near the parish church. The arrival is at Piazza Giuseppe Verdi in Pian Camuno, where the costume awards, group performances, and a final entertainment segment are held. The use of motorized vehicles is prohibited along the route: everything takes place on foot, in a festive atmosphere that involves families and children.
The heart of Carnevalando is the costume competition. Couples and masked groups (at least three people) presenting a single coordinated theme can participate. Each group performs before a jury, which awards prizes for the most successful costumes and choreographies. Participation is free and open to all, but requires advance registration and submission of your musical track to the organizers.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Artogne together with the associations of the three municipalities, Carnevalando is now a traditional event that strengthens the bonds between the valley towns. Created to offer children and families a participatory and shared carnival, it has grown to become a key event for the entire lower Valle Camonica, capable of bringing joy to a February Sunday.
The 2026 edition of Carnevalando marks an important milestone: the 25th edition. The event is scheduled for Sunday, February 8, with the usual travelling format that crosses the three municipalities of the lower Valle Camonica. In case of bad weather, the event is postponed to Sunday, February 15; if that date also has to be cancelled due to rain, the costume contest will be held online.
Couples and masked groups (minimum 3 people on a single theme) can participate in the competition, with a performance before the jury. Registration by February 1st, musical track to be submitted by the same date.
Pian Camuno is located in the lower Valle Camonica (BS), easily accessible from the SS42 del Tonale e della Mendola. By train, the relevant station is Pian Camuno-Gianico on the Brescia-Iseo-Edolo line.
The parade takes place on a Sunday afternoon in February, starting around 1:45 PM from Gianico and arriving around 3:30 PM in Piazza Giuseppe Verdi in Pian Camuno. In case of rain, a backup date is scheduled for the following Sunday.
Participation is free; masked groups and couples must register by the beginning of February. Info and registration: tel. +39 389 8898598 (Stefania).
