The Burning of the Giubiana in Figino Serenza

In Lombard peasant tradition, the Giubiana is the old woman of winter: an effigy that, on the last Thursday of January, is set ablaze in a large bonfire to drive away the cold, darkness, and difficulties of the season and symbolically welcome the light of spring. It is an ancient ritual, widespread throughout Brianza and the Como area, which in Figino Serenza, in the province of Como, is renewed every year on the initiative of the Pro Loco.

A Community Feast

The central moment remains the lighting of the bonfire, around which families and children gather. The event takes place in the oratory spaces, in Viale Rimembranze, and in recent editions has seen the collaboration of the Pro Loco with the Pensioners' Association, the parish, and the town's Farmers' Group. Admission is free.

A Local Tradition

The Burning of the Giubiana places Figino Serenza within a calendar of rituals that, in the same week, light bonfires in many municipalities in Brianza and the province of Como. It is a simple and genuine occasion to experience local folklore and come together outdoors in the middle of winter, amidst the crackling fire and the flavors of tradition.
