The widespread ceramic festival in the village of the Master Potters
Every year, on a weekend in May, the village of Appignano, in the heart of the province of Macerata, participates in Buongiorno Ceramica!, the national widespread festival promoted by the AICC - Italian Association of Cities of Ceramics, which simultaneously involves dozens of Italian municipalities with ancient ceramic traditions. Appignano is one of the five Cities of Ceramics in the Marche and for this occasion opens its workshops, museums, and public spaces, transforming itself into a true open-air museum.
The art of clay working in Appignano has ancient roots: the Museum of Ceramic Art recounts this history through an anthropological journey that starts from the archaeological section, dating back about two thousand years, and reaches contemporary Appignano ceramics and local legumes, another excellence of the Municipality celebrated by the well-known Leguminaria festival. The heart of artisan training is the MAV - Appignano Master Potters Ceramic School, which provides tools and expertise during the festival.
The event features inaugurations of new ceramic works, workshops, and visits. Recent editions have included the morning inauguration of installations created by students from the local comprehensive institute's secondary school along the Via XX Settembre staircase, followed in the afternoon by the presentation of site-specific works by MAV, located in symbolic places of the town such as the Mazzarini Gardens and the War Memorial area.
The weekend in Appignano is linked to the Night of the Museums of the Gran Tour delle Marche, with evocative night visits to the town's museums and the MAV School, thematic tours dedicated to ceramic art, and demonstrations by master potters. It is the most evocative moment of the festival, when the village comes alive after sunset and clay becomes a shared experience.
Buongiorno Ceramica! in Appignano is free to enter: museums, demonstrations, and workshops are free and designed for families, enthusiasts, and the curious. A precious opportunity to get to know the artisan identity of this corner of the Marche and the art of ceramics that has characterized its face for generations.
For the 12th national edition of Buongiorno Ceramica!, Appignano animated the weekend of May 23rd and 24th, 2026 with a rich program. On Saturday, May 23rd at 10 AM, along the Via XX Settembre staircase, the installation Leaving Our Mark on Our Town, created by students from the Luca della Robbia Comprehensive Institute's secondary school, was inaugurated. In the afternoon, at 5 PM, the work Le Radici (The Roots), dedicated to the Leguminaria tradition, was presented at the Mazzarini Gardens, followed by the inauguration of I Germogli (The Sprouts) in front of the War Memorial, both created by MAV - Appignano Master Potters Ceramic School Association.
Throughout the weekend, free visits were offered to the Museum of Ceramic Art, the La Stanza del Telaio Weaving Museum, and the CeramicStore, along with demonstrations by master ceramists and clay working workshops at the MAV School. In the evening, the Night of the Museums of the Gran Tour delle Marche took place, featuring night visits and thematic tours dedicated to ceramic art.
