Hike, planting of the Sibillini Potato and concert by Sparatrapp in the smallest village of Piceno
The Appennino Festival is a travelling review that since 2009 has enlivened the villages of the central Apennines affected by the 2016-2017 earthquake, crossing four regions: Marche, Umbria, Abruzzo, and Lazio. The event, with the subtitle "inclusive of nature", combines guided excursions, mountain food and wine, and live performances to bring life and visitors back to the inland areas. Each edition offers dozens of stops distributed between spring and autumn, each hosted by a different municipality.
The Municipality of Palmiano, the smallest in terms of population in the Province of Ascoli Piceno, hosts one of the most characteristic stops of the Festival. The day, titled "A piantar patate", revolves around the Sibillini Potato, an excellent high-altitude agricultural product: participants do not just observe, but actively take part in planting along the route, experiencing an authentic mountain agriculture experience.
The heart of the morning is a panoramic circular walk of 7.47 km, with an elevation gain of about 355 meters and a duration of about three and a half hours. The difficulty is level E (hiking, suitable for anyone accustomed to walking). Meeting point is at 9:15 AM in Palmiano, with departure at 9:30 AM. The trail crosses the landscapes of the Piceno hinterland, offering wide views of the Sibillini Mountains and the Marche hills.
Upon return, around 1:30 PM, a refreshment point is set up in the square by the Pro Loco with a traditional menu: camminatore's mezze maniche pasta, potatoes and sausage, cantucci biscuits and vino cotto (cooked wine), water and wine, at a cost of 20 euros. In the afternoon, at 3:00 PM, there will be music with a concert by Sparatrapp, a group that blends Neapolitan-style theatricality and street music in an engaging performance.
Promoted by the Structural Commission for the Reconstruction of the 2016 Earthquake and BIM Tronto, the Appennino Festival represents much more than a series of events: it is a tool for revitalizing the small centres of the Marche Apennines and the neighbouring regions. The Palmiano stop, with its intimate dimension deeply connected to the land, embodies its most authentic spirit.
The 17th edition of the Appennino Festival, running from May 3 to October 31, 2026, across 29 municipalities in four regions with the theme "A stone's throw from you", made a stop in Palmiano on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
Meeting at 9:15 AM and departure at 9:30 AM for a 7.47 km circular hike (355 m elevation gain, difficulty E, duration approx. 3.5 hours) with the planting of the Sibillini Potato along the route. At 1:30 PM, lunch by the Pro Loco in the square (camminatore's mezze maniche pasta, potatoes and sausage, cantucci biscuits and vino cotto; 20 euros). At 3:00 PM, the concert by Sparatrapp.
Palmiano is located in the hinterland of the Province of Ascoli Piceno, about 11 km northwest of the provincial capital. By car, it can be reached from the SS4 Salaria with a detour inland. The nearest train station is Ascoli Piceno, from which you can continue by car.
Participation in the excursion is free but requires mandatory booking via the form on the official website www.festivaldellappennino.it. Lunch in the square costs 20 euros.
Trekking shoes, at least one litre of water, and a hat are mandatory. A waterproof jacket, trekking poles, and a change of clothes to leave in the car are recommended.
