Limbiate celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Milano-Torino and Paolo Magretti
In 2026, it will be 150 years since the first Milano-Torino, held in 1876 and won by Paolo Magretti, a figure linked to the region and a pioneer of Italian cycling. Limbiate, in the province of Monza and Brianza, celebrates the anniversary with a comprehensive cultural program, the Anno Magrettiano — Mi-To 150, promoted by the Municipality in collaboration with neighboring towns and the evocative Chiesetta delle Biciclette.
The events are spread throughout 2026: book presentations, conferences on the technical history of the bicycle, theatrical performances, and a grand historical re-enactment. Each event delves into a different aspect of the race's legend and the pioneering era of cycling, intertwining sport, culture, and local memory.
The most spectacular moment is the historical re-enactment of the Milano-Torino, featuring a parade of vintage bicycles and historic cars, accompanied by participants in Belle Époque attire. An inter-municipal route that touches Limbiate, Paderno Dugnano, Senago, and Varedo, transforming the Chiesetta delle Biciclette into an authentic journey through time. The initiative is supported by the Ghisallo Cycling Museum and numerous volunteer associations.
The program also includes a theatrical performance dedicated to Gino Bartali, a cycling champion and "Righteous Among the Nations" for helping Jewish people during the persecution by hiding documents in the frame of his bicycle. A story that connects sport with the major themes of 20th-century history, completing the profound meaning of the Anno Magrettiano.
