Almabtrieb in Matsch

The 2025 edition of the Almabtrieb in Matsch took place in September in the village of Matsch, part of Mals, in the Upper Vinschgau. After a summer spent on high-altitude pastures, the herds were brought down to the valley according to the ancient custom of the autumn transhumance: the animals, adorned with garlands, flowers, and bells, traveled the trails to the village, where they were welcomed by the celebrating inhabitants.

The day continued in the village with traditional music and stalls featuring alpine specialties — cheese, milk, and dishes from the rural Vinschgau cuisine. The event confirmed the strong community value of this festival, experienced by the entire village as a moment of thanksgiving for the safe return of the livestock and a celebration of the bond between the Matsch community and its mountains.
