The Red Arrow returns to the city in the name of Giuseppe Morandi, winner of the first edition
The 1000 Miglia - the legendary regularity race for historic cars defined by Enzo Ferrari as "the most beautiful race in the world" - stops in Castiglione delle Stiviere, a town in the Alto Mantovano region of the province of Mantua, hosting the stamp control for the final leg of the route. Over 400 vintage cars enter the city via Via Gnutti, Via Garibaldi, and Via Ordanino, to stop in Piazza San Luigi, in front of the Basilica, before departing from Viale Boschetti.
The passage of the 1000 Miglia through Castiglione is not accidental: the city celebrates Giuseppe Morandi, a driver from Castiglione born in 1894 who, together with Ferdinando Minoia, won the very first edition of the 1000 Miglia in 1927 at the wheel of an OM 665 Superba, completing the original route in just over 21 hours. Having the race pass through his hometown today, as the mayor emphasized, means "closing a historic circle that has lasted for almost a century".
The Red Arrow passed through Castiglione five times in the historic speed editions (in 1940 and from 1954 to 1957). Today, the re-enactment picks up that thread, making the town in Mantua one of the most significant stops on the route. On the occasion of the passage, the city sets up a travelling museum of the 1000 Miglia and a photographic exhibition dedicated to the race, "The 1000 Miglia in Castiglione - Yesterday and Today".
The arrival of the historic cars transforms Castiglione delle Stiviere into a large gathering of enthusiasts. Amidst the roar of vintage engines, the charm of the car bodies, and the backdrop of the Basilica-Sanctuary of San Luigi, the passage of the 1000 Miglia is an event that combines automotive passion with the historical memory of a territory.
The 44th re-enactment of the 1000 Miglia (scheduled from June 9 to 13, 2026, starting from Brescia) concludes in the Mantua region with the stage in Castiglione delle Stiviere, which on Saturday, June 13 hosts the stamp control for the final leg. The over 400 vintage cars enter the city from Via Gnutti, Via Garibaldi, and Via Ordanino, reach Piazza San Luigi in front of the Basilica for stamping, and depart from Viale Boschetti. The edition pays homage to Giuseppe Morandi, a driver from Castiglione who won the first 1000 Miglia in 1927 with Ferdinando Minoia.
The 44th re-enactment starts from Brescia on June 9 and touches Versilia, Rome, Assisi, Gubbio, and Rimini before concluding in the Mantua region.
