The masquerade party in Torraca, in the heart of lower Cilento
Every year, during the Carnival season, Torraca transforms into a small theater of masks and colors. The Torraca Carnival is the event that closes the town's carnival season: a party designed for the community, where homemade costumes, improvised disguises, and traditional masks mingle without too much formality. It is not a staged tourist attraction, but a heartfelt tradition that belongs to the villagers and their children.
In 2026, the invitation extended to the citizens by the Municipality of Torraca arrived with a slogan that perfectly captures the spirit of the evening: "Wear your mask, unleash the magic." A simple way to remember that Carnival, even before being a show, is a collective game.
Torraca is a municipality of just over a thousand inhabitants in the province of Salerno, in Campania, nestled at an altitude of 425 meters in lower Cilento, just a few kilometers from Sapri and the Gulf of Policastro. The historic center preserves the layout of a medieval village, with narrow alleys, terraces, and glimpses that open onto the sea and the Bulgheria massif.
Torraca is also known for a curious record: since 2007, it has been considered the first "Led City" in the world, the first municipality to have entirely converted its public lighting to LED technology. A choice that has given the village a unique light, especially on winter evenings.
The Torraca Carnival takes place in the town's multipurpose hall, a space that in winter becomes the natural venue for community parties. The event is held in the evening and is open to all ages: children, families, and young people from the village arrive in costume, and the hall fills with disguises in an atmosphere that recalls the village parties of the past, when Carnival was organized from house to house.
The Torraca carnival tradition, as local guides recall, has also seen moments of parades with floats and masked groups through the village streets over the years, according to the custom widespread throughout Cilento.
The Torraca Carnival is not an isolated event: on the same day of Shrove Tuesday, dozens of municipalities in the province of Salerno come alive with parades and masquerade parties. In Cilento and the Gulf of Policastro alone, the 2026 edition saw events in Scario, Santa Marina, Policastro Bussentino, Camerota, Centola-Palinuro, Ascea Marina, Pollica, Cannalonga, and Agropoli, as well as in the Sele plain in Battipaglia and Eboli.
For those visiting Cilento out of season, Carnival is the best opportunity to see these towns in their most authentic dimension: no summer crowds, but squares and parish halls full of locals. In Torraca, the party is part of a calendar of events that also includes the Ancient Flavors Festival in August and the patronal celebrations of San Pietro Apostolo (June 29th) and the Madonna dei Cordici (September 8th).
The event follows the mobile calendar of Carnival and is traditionally concentrated on Shrove Tuesday, which in 2026 fell on February 17th. The evening began at 8:00 PM in the multipurpose hall. To find out the dates and details of future editions, it is advisable to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Torraca, which publishes the event poster from time to time.
Shrove Tuesday 2026 fell on February 17th, and Torraca celebrated it with its masquerade party in the town's multipurpose hall, starting at 8:00 PM. The invitation to the citizens, relaunched by the local Cilento press, carried the slogan "Wear your mask, unleash the magic."
The evening closed the carnival period in the small municipality of the province of Salerno, on a day when the entire territory was celebrating: from the parades on the coast of Scario, Policastro Bussentino, Camerota, and Palinuro to the events in the Cilento hinterland, up to Agropoli, Battipaglia, and Eboli. In Torraca, the choice was for an intimate indoor party, suitable for the season and the size of the village, where the masked participation of the inhabitants is the true heart of the event.
At the time of publication, available sources do not report a more detailed hourly program of the evening or the list of planned entertainment.
