Faith, folklore, and community in the heart of the Sannio region
The San Lupo Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the year for the small municipality of San Lupo, located in the province of Benevento, Campania. With fewer than seven hundred residents, an altitude of five hundred meters, and a historic center nestled in the Sannio hills, the village shifts gears for four days at the end of July, filling with families returning for the occasion, visitors from nearby towns, and street stalls.
In 2026, the festivities will take place from Monday, July 27th to Thursday, July 30th, with the solemn feast day of the patron saint set as always on July 29th. These dates are confirmed by municipal ordinance no. 14/2026, which regulates temporary road closures in the town center for the duration of the festival and requires bus route diversions.
The patron saint is Saint Lupus of Troyes, the bishop of the French city of Troyes who, according to tradition, managed to halt the destructive fury of Attila the Hun in 451, saving his city. This figure speaks volumes about local devotion: a protector invoked against calamities, whose name has become the very name of this Sannio village.
The summer recurrence on July 29th is complemented by a second celebration on April 28th, commemorating the rain deemed miraculous in 1830, which arrived to save the wheat during a severe drought. These two dates illustrate how deeply the cult of the patron saint is linked to the agricultural life of these hills.
The heart of the festival is the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the village parish, which houses the polychrome wooden bust of Saint Lupus created in 1708 by the Neapolitan sculptor Giacomo Colombo (1663-1731), one of the great woodcarvers of the Southern Baroque. The effigy, which has undergone restoration in recent years, is carried in procession through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the faithful, confraternities, and the local band: it is the most intense and well-attended moment of the four days.
As in many patronal feasts in the Sannio, the calendar proceeds along two parallel tracks that constantly intertwine. The recurring elements of the event include:
Admission to all religious and civic events is free.
The festival's food stalls showcase authentic Sannio cuisine: traditional peasant first courses, grilled meats, artisanal desserts, and wines from the province of Benevento, one of the most important wine-growing areas in Campania. San Lupo, moreover, has a signature product of its own, the Fagiolo della Regina (Queen's Bean), celebrated with a dedicated festival in September: those who arrive in summer hear about it, and those who return in autumn find it as the star of the show.
It is worth arriving a few hours early to walk through the village. Beyond the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, you will find the 17th-century Church of the Annunziata, while outside the town stands the Ponte delle Janare (Witches' Bridge), spanning the stream of the same name: a place linked to Sannio legends about the janare, the witches of Benevento folklore, which intertwines here with the ancient reputation of Benevento as the city of witches.
The festival is free and suitable for all ages, with evenings that come alive especially after 9:00 PM. The detailed program, including times and guests, is released by the Municipality of San Lupo and the parish in the days leading up to the event: it is advisable to check the official channels and the Facebook page dedicated to the Patronal Feast before traveling.
Four days of festivities in San Lupo, in the province of Benevento, from July 27th to 30th, 2026. The date is clear: July 29th is the liturgical feast of Saint Lupus of Troyes, the village's patron saint, and the entire calendar is built around this day, featuring novenas, solemn masses, and the procession of the wooden bust by Giacomo Colombo through the historic center.
Official confirmation of the dates comes from municipal ordinance no. 14/2026, which mandates temporary road closures for the duration of the festivities and requires bus lines to follow diversions: the Air Campania EBN018 Pietraroja-Benevento line is limited to the San Lupo junction, while the 33CE Naples-Campobasso line via Telese follows an alternative route.
The detailed civic program, including times and musical guests, will be announced by the Municipality and the parish a few days before the event. Admission remains free as always.

Municipal ordinance no. 14/2026 provides for the temporary closure of the town center to vehicular traffic from July 27th to 30th, 2026. It is advisable to leave your car in areas outside the historic center and continue on foot: distances in such a small village are minimal.
Admission is free to all religious and civic events. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls and market stands.
