A week of events for the patron saint of Treia, between faith, culture, and tradition
The Saint Patrick Festival is the major patronal feast of Treia, an elegant hilltop town in the Province of Macerata, in the heart of the Marche region. For a week, usually around March 17th, the historic center comes alive with a calendar that combines religious dimension, live entertainment, and popular tradition, transforming streets and squares into a widespread stage.
Treia is one of the very few Italian towns to have Saint Patrick, the apostle of Ireland, as its patron saint. The devotion dates back to the 16th century: tradition tells that the community, threatened by wars and plagues, dedicated itself to the saint, invoking his protection, and that after the calamities, a period of prosperity followed, consolidating the cult. Since then, March 17th, the liturgical feast of Saint Patrick, has been the most cherished day of the year for the people of Treia.
The civil heart of the festival is the traditional Saint Patrick's Fair, which from early morning invades the streets of the historic center with stalls, food stands, and local crafts. On the religious front, the solemn procession in the afternoon carries the statue of the saint along the town's streets, followed by Holy Mass in the main church.
The festival complements tradition with a rich cultural program: performances at the Municipal Theatre, concerts, book presentations, the extraordinary opening of the town's museums (from the Archaeological Museum to the Dolores Prato Study Center), and events dedicated to families and schoolchildren. There are also Celtic dances, a tribute to the patron saint's Irish roots. Framing it all are the floral installations of "March Gardens", which color squares and alleys throughout the event.
The festival is also the ideal occasion to visit Treia, a city of art overlooking the Potenza valley, famous for its scenic Piazza della Repubblica and for the Gioco del Pallone col Bracciale (a traditional ball game). An event that tells the soul of a municipality proud of its roots, where popular faith and cultural life coexist naturally.
From March 14 to 21, 2026, Treia celebrated its patron saint with the Saint Patrick Festival, a week of cultural, religious, and popular initiatives spread throughout the historic center. The opening was entrusted to the "March Gardens" and a comedy at the Municipal Theatre, with the highlight on March 17th with the traditional Saint Patrick's Fair and the procession, closing with the Saint Patrick's Concert by the Cittร di Treia Municipal Band.
Treia can be reached by car from the SS77 Val di Chienti (Macerata exit) or from the Tolentino expressway, continuing along the provincial roads towards the hilltop town. The nearest train station is Macerata, from which you can continue by bus or car. Reference airport: Ancona-Falconara, about an hour away.
Events are concentrated in the historic center: Municipal Theatre, Piazza della Repubblica, the streets of the Fair, and the town's museums.
