The oldest festival of grapes in the Marche region, in the capital of Verdicchio
Perched at over 500 meters above sea level among the hills of the Province of Ancona, Cupramontana has always been considered the capital of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi. It's no surprise, then, that the village is also home to the Sagra dell'Uva, the oldest food and wine event in the Marche region: the first edition dates back to 1928, and for almost a century, the festival has marked the time when the entire community celebrates the end of the grape harvest.
The heart of the Sagra dell'Uva is the grand parade of allegorical floats, built throughout the year by the town's contrade with creativity, humor, and a good dose of local pride. On Sunday afternoon, the floats parade through the historic center to Piazza Cavour, where a jury awards prizes to the most successful creations. Another unmissable event is the Palio della Pigiatura, a re-enactment of the ancient grape-stomping with bare feet in vats, a competition that pits the contrade against each other amidst laughter and enthusiasm.
Throughout the festival, the village is filled with characteristic food stalls, where you can taste dishes of Marche cuisine naturally paired with local Verdicchio. There are also performances by folk groups, traditional songs, musical bands, and shows by the contrade, which liven up alleys and squares in an atmosphere of authentic celebration.
In recent years, the Sagra dell'Uva has combined tradition with a rich program of evening concerts in the square, attracting large crowds from all over the Marche region. The event, organized by the Fondazione Sagra dell'Uva Cupramontana, thus manages to blend history, tradition, and entertainment, confirming itself as one of the most important autumn events in the Marche territory.
From October 1st to 4th, 2026, Cupramontana returns to celebrate its 89th Sagra dell'Uva, the oldest in the Marche region. The event, organized by the Fondazione Sagra dell'Uva Cupramontana, once again combines the tradition of the grape harvest with major musical performances. Mayor Enrico Giampieri has presented an edition that aims to "unite history, tradition, and innovation." Ticket pre-sales for the concerts are managed through Ciaotickets.
The complete program for all days will be published on the event's official website and social media channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
Cupramontana is located in the hinterland of the Province of Ancona, in the Castelli di Jesi area. By car, it can be reached from the Ancona Nord exit of the A14 motorway, then continuing towards Jesi and the inland (about 45 minutes). The nearest train station is Jesi, on the Rome-Ancona line, from which you can continue by bus or car.
The festival takes place between the end of September and the first days of October, coinciding with the grape harvest. Evenings with concerts may require an entrance ticket; most traditional events (float parade, Palio della Pigiatura, food stalls) are freely accessible.
Don't miss the Verdicchio wine tasting at the food stalls and a visit to the MIG - Musei in Grotta (Museums in Caves) dedicated to wine labels, which tells the story of the deep connection between Cupramontana and viticulture.
