On the evening of Good Friday, the historic centre of Cisterna di Latina becomes a vast open-air theatre: the Sacred Representation of the Passion of Christ, also known as the city Via Crucis, retraces the final hours of Jesus' life, turning squares and streets into the stations of the journey to Calvary. The event, held in the municipality of Cisterna di Latina, in the province of Latina, Lazio, draws thousands of people every year for a silent, poignant procession.

Fourteen living tableaux

The heart of the event is the sequence of fourteen living tableaux curated by the Nova Totus Tuus Association, under the artistic direction of Monica Scalese and with the patronage of the Municipality. Around 250 costumed performers bring the scenes of the Passion to life: the Last Supper, the betrayal, the condemnation, the flagellation, the climb to Calvary, and the crucifixion. Costumes, lighting, and choreography recreate the atmosphere of biblical Jerusalem, while the city itself serves as the living backdrop for the entire route.

The Procession of the Dead Christ

Interwoven with the theatrical performance is the traditional Procession of the Dead Christ, a moment of profound devotion involving the six parishes of the city's Pastoral Collaboration Unit. The streets of the centre become a path of prayer marked by meditations, which in recent years have been prepared by the diocesan Bishop, Monsignor Mariano Crociata. The result is a rare balance between spirituality and popular art, in which the entire community finds its identity.

The Passion of Christ in Cisterna di Latina is not merely a show: it is a tradition spanning over two decades that has become a fixture in the Lazio Holy Week calendar. The voluntary participation of hundreds of citizens of all ages makes it a deeply identity-driven event, capable of strengthening the bond between the community, its parishes, and the local territory.
