Ru-mòre — Festival of Cinema and Audiovisual Experimentation is the event that every spring ignites the San Lorenzo district, a historic university and creative quarter in Rome, with short films and new audiovisual languages. Dedicated to emerging short film directors, the festival embraces all forms of contemporary experimentation: video art, virtual reality, immersive languages, performances, and installations. The name itself, Ru-mòre, is an invitation to creative ferment and community, in a neighborhood that has always made independent culture its true identity.
A decentralized festival across the district
Ru-mòre is a decentralized festival: not just one theater, but a network of spaces that for five days become a single, large cinematic square. The beating heart is the Cinema Tibur, a historic venue on Via degli Etruschi that hosts competitions, screenings, and meetings with filmmakers. Surrounding it are the Lembi space, dedicated to virtual reality, the San Lorenzo Market with its installations, and other venues like the Pastificio Cerere, Porte Rosse, Galleria delle Arti, Monitor, Tomo, and the Chiosco di San Lorenzo. Walking between these locations is part of the experience: the festival becomes a way to rediscover the neighborhood.
The competitions: short films, screenplays, and virtual reality
The program revolves around three main competitions. The short film competition features around forty works selected from all over the world, divided into national, international, documentary, and animation sections, with over 70 titles from about thirty countries. Alongside this, the screenplay competition awards short and feature film scripts yet to be produced, while the virtual reality competition and the XR Showcase, hosted at the Lembi space, immerse the audience in experiences ranging from social drama to avant-garde aesthetic research.
Video art, installations, and performances
Beyond the screenings, Ru-mòre expands with a section dedicated to art and experimentation, featuring site-specific installations, performances, and video projections in the district's exhibition spaces. The festival gives a voice to cinema that engages with contemporary art and new technologies, from artificial intelligence to immersive languages, in a journey designed for both industry professionals and curious audiences.
From the Barkov Film Festival to Ru-mòre
Ru-mòre was born as the successor to the Barkov Film Festival, the short and experimental film event that animated the Roman scene for seven editions. With the new organization entrusted to 8 Production and the artistic direction of Laura Catalano and Giorgio Calogero, the festival has relaunched its path toward digital and immersive languages, maintaining the same passion for auteur short films and research.

Ru-mòre Festival — edition 2026
The eighth edition of Ru-mòre — Festival of Cinema and Audiovisual Experimentation was held from April 14 to 18, 2026, in San Lorenzo, Rome. Curated by the new organization 8 Production, with artistic direction by Laura Catalano and Giorgio Calogero and executive direction by Silvio Giannini, the edition brought over 70 titles from about thirty countries to the Cinema Tibur, the Lembi space, and the San Lorenzo Market, including short films in competition, virtual reality works, and installations.

Cinema Tibur — Short Film Competition
The heart of the festival, the Cinema Tibur, hosted the short film competition with about 40 works selected from around the world, divided into national, international, documentary, and animation sections (over 70 titles in total from about 30 countries). Screenings were held daily in two evening slots, approximately 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM and 9:30 PM - 11:00 PM, accompanied by meetings with the directors. Among the competing shorts, Papillon by Florence Miailhe, a 2026 Oscar nominee for Best Animated Short Film.
Lembi Space — VR Competition and XR Showcase
At the Lembi space, the audience immersed themselves in the virtual reality competition and the XR Showcase, featuring works such as Anamnesis by Petr Salaba, Mirage by Naima Karim, and, out of competition, The Exploding Girl by Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel.
Screenplay Competition
Alongside the films, the screenplay competition awarded projects for short and feature films yet to be produced, by national and international authors.
Art, Installations, and Performances
The section dedicated to art and experimentation brought the installation Anzi parla by artist Eloise Fornieles to the San Lorenzo Market, inspired by the thoughts of Carla Lonzi and the Roman myth of the "talking statues." Also on the program was the performance Saint Francis according to Manetas: CIIM by Miltos Manetas, video projections at the Galleria delle Arti, and the educational project Mappe di sguardi, aimed at primary schools and families.

How to get there
San Lorenzo is located just a short walk from Termini Station and the La Sapienza University City. Tram lines 3 and 19 serve the district directly; numerous bus lines connect the neighborhood to the city center. Those arriving by train can reach the festival venues on foot from Termini in about ten minutes.
