Half a century of the Passion of Christ told through images, in the heart of Monte San Pietrangeli
The "50 Years of Passion of Christ" Photo Exhibition is the display with which Monte San Pietrangeli, a small village in the Province of Fermo in the Marche region, celebrates half a century of its most beloved re-enactment. Since 1976, the Holy Friday Committee has continued the traditional liturgical-dramatic re-enactment of the Passion and Death of Jesus, one of the oldest religious events in the Marche territory.
The exhibition traces, through historical and more recent photographs, the evolution of a performance that involves hundreds of participants from the Municipality of Monte San Pietrangeli each year, dressed in Roman-Palestinian period costumes. The halls of the San Giovanni Cultural Centre thus become a journey through collective memory, where generations of inhabitants recognize themselves in the scenes re-enacted along the streets of the historic centre.
The exhibition is closely intertwined with the Passion of Christ, the historical re-enactment which in 2026 reaches its 48th edition and originates from the evocative bier of the Dead Christ by Luigi Fontana, created between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The photographic exhibition was created to capture fifty years of faces, rehearsals, sets, and processions over time, highlighting the value of a community that has made faith and popular participation its identity.
The exhibition is hosted in the San Giovanni Cultural Centre, in Piazza Umberto I, located within an ancient Renaissance church that now serves as an exhibition space and auditorium for the village. Its location in the monumental heart of Monte San Pietrangeli strengthens the dialogue between religious heritage, photographic memory, and community life.
The exhibition is open from March 29th to April 11th, 2026, in the period preceding and accompanying Holy Week, so as to ideally connect with the re-enactment of the Passion of Christ scheduled in the village. Organized by the Pro Loco of Monte San Pietrangeli, it represents an opportunity to discover a deeply rooted Marche tradition and to visit one of the most picturesque villages in the Valle del Tenna.
