The festival of the small Sanità district in Aci Catena, blending tradition and devotion on the second Sunday of September

The Madonna della Sanità Festival is one of the most cherished celebrations in the small Sanità district, a neighborhood of Aci Catena, in the province of Catania, falling within the parish territory of Santa Lucia. Every year, on the second Sunday of September, the local community gathers around the church of the same name to renew their devotion to the Virgin, invoked for generations as a protector of health and a symbol of hope.
Aci Catena is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Catania rich in religious traditions: its territory boasts numerous churches and six parishes, and the calendar of festivals spans the entire year, from the great feast of Maria Santissima della Catena in mid-August to the celebrations of Santa Lucia in December. In this mosaic of devotions, the Sanità Festival retains the charm of a neighborhood feast: less flashy than the major city solemnities, but for this very reason more genuine and deeply connected to the daily life of the district.
The heart of the festival is religious. The day opens with a solemn Eucharistic celebration in the church dedicated to the Madonna della Sanità, followed by the procession of the statue through the main streets of the district. The parade is accompanied by confraternities, the faithful, and the essential brass band, whose marches mark the passage of the Virgin among the houses and balconies decorated for the occasion.
As in any self-respecting Sicilian festival, the spiritual dimension at the Sanità is accompanied by a convivial one. Along the streets of the district, food stalls are set up with traditional dishes and products from the Etna region, while musical shows and folk entertainment enliven the evening, turning the festival into a meeting point for the entire Aci Catena community.
Those visiting Aci Catena during the festival discover an authentic face of Sicily, far from the major tourist circuits: a community that recognizes itself in its roots and, year after year, renews a bond of faith, memory, and belonging around the Madonna della Sanità.
At the moment, the detailed program for the 2026 edition of the Madonna della Sanità Festival has not yet been published. The festival of the Sanità district in Aci Catena is traditionally held on the second Sunday of September and follows the usual format of Sicilian neighborhood feasts: solemn Eucharistic celebration, procession of the Madonna's statue through the streets with a brass band and confraternities, shows and folk entertainment, and food stalls with local products. The dates and the calendar of celebrations will be announced by the neighborhood community and the Santa Lucia parish in the weeks leading up to the event.
