The great Easter exhibition spread across Maerne, Martellago, and Olmo
For some years now, Easter in Martellago, in the province of Venice, has had an unmistakable face: that of the giant polystyrene eggs that appear in the squares of the three hamlets of Maerne, Martellago town center, and Olmo. Born in 2021 on the initiative of Pro Loco Martellago, the exhibition has become in just a few editions an anticipated event throughout the Venetian mainland, so much so that some of the works have also been exhibited outside the municipality.
The eggs, some up to two meters high, are painted and decorated by about thirty local artists: the result is a collection that changes theme, colors, and subjects each year, from traditional motifs of Easter rebirth to more playful and contemporary reinterpretations. It is a form of widespread folk art, designed to be experienced while strolling through Piazza IV Novembre in Maerne, Piazza Vittoria in Martellago, and Piazza Maestri del Lavoro in Olmo.
An entertainment program revolves around the exhibition: egg painting workshops for children, tastings of Easter products, the traditional game of Sbuccia l'uovo colorato (Peel the Colored Egg), and the distribution of chocolate eggs to the little ones at the Pro Loco's gazebo. The initiative is also an opportunity to learn about the association's volunteer work, which organizes the event together with the Municipality of Martellago.
The sixth edition confirms the formula of the distributed exhibition: about fifty giant eggs will remain on display outdoors from Palm Sunday (March 28) until April 11, distributed among the three hamlets of Martellago. The highlight is the inauguration on Sunday, March 29, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, in Piazza IV Novembre in Maerne.
Distributed exhibition in the squares of Maerne (Piazza IV Novembre), Martellago (Piazza Vittoria), and Olmo (Piazza Maestri del Lavoro). The inauguration and main activities take place in Maerne.
The eggs remain on display throughout the Easter period, from Palm Sunday until after Easter. Free admission.
Maerne is about 8 km from Mestre. By car from the Mestre ring road, take the Castellana exit towards Zelarino and then Olmo. By bus with line 5E from Mestre Centro.
