The patron saint of the Molise village

In Petrella Tifernina, a village in the interior of Molise in the province of Campobasso, the Feast of the Patron Saint Saint George the Martyr is celebrated on April 23rd, the liturgical day dedicated to the saint. Saint George is a figure linked to history and legend in the town, also preserved in the splendid Romanesque church of San Giorgio Martire, an architectural jewel of the village.

Tradition and gastronomy

The festival combines religious moments — the procession of the saint's statue and the celebrations in church — with the popular and gastronomic traditions of the town. Among these are the traditional sweets called "cappelli di prete" (priest's hats) and the "ricciata", a dish of boiled wheat and chickpeas linked to the anniversary, a symbol of an ancient bond between faith, land, and cuisine.

Organized with the Pro Loco (local tourist board) of Petrella Tifernina, the patron saint's festival is one of the village's identity moments, an occasion when the community — residents and emigrants returning for the occasion — comes together around Saint George in the heart of the Molise spring.
