Faith, culture, and tradition around the Monastery
The Madonna del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary), whose liturgical feast day is October 7th, is the patron saint of Cairate, a municipality in the province of Varese known for its monumental Monastery of Santa Maria Assunta. In her honour, on the first weekend of October, the town celebrates its patronal festival: several days of celebrations that blend religious dimension, culture, and entertainment.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the solemn mass on Sunday morning, followed in the afternoon by the procession that winds through the town's streets: a moment of strong community participation, one of the most heartfelt of the year for the people of Cairate. The preceding evenings feature rosary recitations and prayer moments dedicated to families.
The Monastery of Santa Maria Assunta provides the backdrop for cultural initiatives: art exhibitions, watercolour and illustration painting exhibitions, activities for children such as workshops and theatrical performances. An opportunity to visit one of the most important historical complexes in the Varesotto region.
Among the most beloved events is Camminar Gustando, an gastronomic walk that combines the pleasure of food with the discovery of the territory. There are also food stalls organised by local associations and the Pro Loco Cairate, offering typical specialities and tastings, along with a craft market that completes the festival.
The 2026 edition of the Festa Patronale di Cairate will feature the usual calendar linked to the feast of the Madonna del Rosario (October 7th): religious celebrations with a solemn mass and procession, cultural initiatives at the Monastery of Santa Maria Assunta, the gastronomic walk Camminar Gustando, and stalls from associations and the Pro Loco. Dates and detailed program will be announced by the Municipality of Cairate and the parish in the weeks preceding the festival.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including dates and times for masses, procession, exhibitions, Camminar Gustando, and food stalls, will be published by the Municipality of Cairate and the parish closer to the festival. The usual structure includes evenings of prayer, a solemn Sunday mass with an afternoon procession, exhibitions at the Monastery, workshops for children, and gastronomic events.
