The patronal feast of Rovello Porro at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is located in Rovello Porro, a municipality in the province of Como, along Via Madonna. Formerly known as Santa Maria della Lura, the building likely dates back to the 13th century as a small rural chapel; the first document certifying its existence is a deed from 1519. Deteriorated over time, the sanctuary was entirely rebuilt in 1925 based on a design by the Milanese architect Ugo Zanchetta and solemnly inaugurated in 1935. The main altar houses the wooden statue of the Madonna del Carmine, donated in 1677 by Marquis Cesare Pagani.
Since the 17th century, the Carmelites began to solemnize the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel by carrying the statue of the Madonna in procession: a tradition that is renewed today on the third Sunday of July. The procession through the village streets is the most anticipated and participated moment, the heart of a festival that involves the entire parish community.
The patronal feast is not confined to a single day: for about a week, around the solemnity, Rovello Porro experiences a packed calendar of religious and popular events. In recent editions, the occasion has been enriched with special moments, such as the historical pageant through the village streets and celebrations related to the centenary of the sanctuary's reconstruction.
The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is much more than a liturgical recurrence: it is the very identity of Rovello Porro, an event that has bound its inhabitants to their sanctuary for centuries. For those who wish to discover the most authentic dimension of the Como Brianza region, it is a precious opportunity.
The central moment of the 2026 festival is the procession of the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which on the third Sunday of July traverses the streets of Rovello Porro following a tradition dating back to the 17th century.
