The Forty Hours and the blessing of Saint Nicholas's rolls at the Basilica of Tolentino
The Feast of Bread and Forty Hours of Saint Nicholas is one of the most heartfelt religious events in Tolentino, in the province of Macerata, in the Marche region. It takes place in the majestic Basilica Sanctuary of Saint Nicholas, in Piazza Silverj, where the relics of the Augustinian Saint, patron of the city and numerous municipalities of the Monti Azzurri Mountain Union, rest. The feast combines two distinct but intertwined moments: the Forty Hours of Eucharistic adoration and the solemn blessing of the bread, which gives the entire celebration its name.
The devotion has its roots in an episode from the life of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, who lived in the 13th century. Gravely ill, the Saint had a vision of the Virgin Mary, who invited him to beg for a loaf of bread, dip it in water, and eat it, trusting in her intercession: he was completely healed. From then on, Nicholas began to distribute blessed bread to the sick he visited, urging them to entrust themselves to the protection of the Virgin. Thus, the blessed rolls of Saint Nicholas were born, famous since the Middle Ages and still prepared today in the Sanctuary with only flour and water, without yeast, as a sacramental sign of the Church.
The blessing of the rolls is a special rite, approved by the Church and reserved for the Augustinian Order, which preserves the Basilica. The ceremony includes the singing of the hymn Te canunt omnes dedicated to Saint Nicholas, biblical readings, and prayers of consecration, after which the breads are distributed to the faithful and pilgrims. Over the centuries, the rolls have been attributed numerous miracles, documented not only in Italy but also in Spain, Belgium, and South America.
In the days preceding the feast, the Basilica experiences the intense event of the Forty Hours, the traditional continuous Eucharistic adoration before the exposed Blessed Sacrament. The days are marked by community prayer, the singing of Lauds in the morning, Eucharistic celebrations, and evening Vespers with Eucharistic blessing.
The Feast of Bread draws faithful and pilgrims from all over the region and beyond to Tolentino. The climax is the final Sunday, with the solemn Eucharistic celebration in the central nave of the Basilica and the distribution of the blessed bread. It is an opportunity to discover not only a living devotion but also the artistic heritage of the Sanctuary, famous for its frescoed Cappellone, a jewel of 14th-century Marche painting.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of Bread and Forty Hours had a special significance: it marked the centenary of the discovery of Saint Nicholas's relics (1926-2026). From March 11 to 15, the Basilica experienced the Forty Hours of Eucharistic adoration, with days marked by prayer: in the morning, the singing of Lauds and Mass with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, and in the evening, Vespers and Eucharistic blessing.
The climax was on Sunday, March 15, with the solemn celebration in the central nave of the Basilica and the traditional blessing and distribution of Saint Nicholas's rolls. The Mass was presided over by Cardinal Augusto Paolo Lojudice, in the presence of religious and civil authorities and representatives of the Monti Azzurri municipalities that recognize Saint Nicholas as their patron.
