The solemn Eucharistic procession in the historic village of Mondolfo
The Corpus Domini Festival is one of the most cherished religious events for the community of Mondolfo, a charming hilltop village in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the Marche region, part of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy' circuit. The celebration of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ takes place in the Insigne Collegiata e Parrocchiale di Santa Giustina, a church documented as early as 1290 and elevated to collegiate status by Pope Urban VIII in 1635, which overlooks the town's main central square, alongside the Town Hall and the Civic Tower.
The festival begins with the Holy Mass at 7:00 PM in the Collegiate Church of Santa Giustina. At the end of the celebration, the solemn Eucharistic procession commences, winding through the historic center of the village along a traditional route: Via XX Settembre, Via Borroni, Via Marconi, Corso della Libertà , and Piazza del Comune. The Most Blessed Sacrament is carried in procession among the ancient walls of the Mondolfo castle, in an atmosphere of deep devotion that involves the entire community.
One of the most evocative moments of the day involves the First Communion children, who scatter rose petals along the route as the Most Blessed Sacrament passes. The parish invites the faithful to contribute by bringing rose petals, a simple and ancient gesture that makes the procession particularly colorful and participatory. This custom, deeply rooted in the popular tradition of the Marche region, connects generations and renews the sense of community belonging each year.
At the end of the procession, the celebration continues with a convivial moment: a feast-dinner held in the parish hall on Via Fratelli Rosselli. Here too, participation is based on sharing, with attendees invited to bring food to contribute to a communal meal. It's an opportunity to gather together after the religious service, in an atmosphere of friendship and fraternity that has always characterized village life.
The Corpus Domini Festival is also an occasion to discover Mondolfo, nicknamed the "Balcony of the Adriatic" for its panoramic position on a hill just a few kilometers from the sea, on the left bank of the Cesano River. Once part of the Duchy of Urbino, the village is entirely encircled by a double ring of defensive walls and is one of the best-preserved historic centers in the Marche region, ideal for visiting in conjunction with its evocative religious tradition.
